I've been trying to install the software on to both my desktop and laptop pc's but every time I install, irrespective of if I select the upgrade option or a complete fresh install I get the error message ( 80070017 ). It comes up at varying points in the installationm process. I've remastered both my laptop and desktop with the original O/S. I've also tried with both pc's having no o/s on them at all and booting from the dvd.
I've also tried installing it by copying the files to the hard drive, when I do that it generates the error message "Unale to open windows image" and stops the installation. It seems quite a few people are suffering from this.. Has anyone had a successful instal and if so any advice?

I get to know from a computer company that errors in the installation process can ONLY happen in due of a bad DVD. So the problem is with the DVD, not your computer.

Okay, this same thing happened to me. I installed the image that I downloaded from Microsoft on 3 DVDs. On the first one, the burning didn't work out that well. But, the second 2 worked perfectly. I tried to install Vista on 4 of my Desktops and 3 Notebooks. I tried both an Upgrade and a Re-installation of Windows. Every time I attempted to install it, a window came up and that read: "ERROR: Cannot copy Setup Files. Installation will now cancel.
Installation Error Message 80070017."
Can someone please help me with this?
I've downloaded the image 6 times now and each time it fails, I've used 3 different dvd writing software packages and the same thing happens, if what you are saying is the case then could it be that Microsoft need to re do the image they have put on the server for download.

I personally dont think its an issue with the DVD or the Image, I had the same problems and I still cannot install Vista Beta 2 x86 on my PC.
Having tried both upgrades and fresh installs neither option worked, I also tried using the ISO on a virtual drive with the same outcome, finally I tried copy the files onto HD and run from there, same again.
Its either error 80070017 or cannot locate windows image or error laying down files.
I tried my DVD which I downloaded from Microsoft and burned myself using Nero on another PC and it installed first time perfectly not a single error.
My machine meets all the requirements and after running the update advisor thing it said I was fine.
So if there is anyone out there who knows what this problem is please help.

I was getting the same error. Setup would get 63% thru copying files, then bottom out with that error.
I had read a suggestion someplace to try disconnecting any unnecessary USB devices, then restarting the download. I did that, and it works! Installed like a dream.
